Whooo Can Guess the Most Baby Items?
The baby shower alphabet game. This game sheet has the letters A through Z with lines for your party guests to write on. Here’s how it works: Hand out the game sheets and pencils, set a timer for between 2 and 3 minutes and have your guests write down as many baby items as they can for a specific letter.

Baby Shower Word Scramble
The baby shower word scramble game is a baby themed twist on a classic mind exercise. This shower game has 17 scrambled words with space for your shower guests to write their answers. Hand out the sheets and pencils, set a timer (maybe a bit longer this time… 3 to 5 minutes) and have everyone try to unscramble the baby related words. We’ve included the answer sheet in this download.

Oh Baby
This baby shower game is a bit more challenging. There are 25 spaces available for your shower guests to write down as many songs, movies or phrases with the word “baby” in them. Set a timer for around 5 minutes and give your guests the instructions. You can award extra points for more obscure answers.

Wishes for Baby
This baby shower game will be a keepsake for the expecting mother. Hand out the game sheet with pencils and ask the shower guests to write down their wishes and hopes for baby. For example, I hope you laugh – at least once per day for no particular reason. When your guests are done filling in their sheets you can give them to the mom-to-be.

Probably the type of photo editing that gets requested of Scrapless Press most often, especially for birth announcements, is to convert color photos to black and white. It’s a feature that is available on smartphones and in photo editing software and is very simple to do. The problem with changing color photos to black and white is that unless you control the range of each tone the photo can end up too dark or flat, lacking contrast.

I’m going to show you two methods for black and white conversion; they are the hue / saturation method and using the black and white adjustment layer in Adobe Photoshop CS. It helps to have the layers palette visible when you’re editing so let’s do that now. Choose Layer from the Window menu. It’s about midway down.

The Hue / Saturation Method

First let’s prepare our photo to begin playing with the various tones. From the Layer menu, choose New Adjustment Layer, then Hue/Saturation, click OK, then set the blend mode to Color. We’ll come back to this layer in a moment. Create another Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and bring the saturation setting all the way to the left at -100. Your photo will be stripped of all color at this point… black and white.

Now that we have our layers set up to adjust tones, let’s experiment. Select the first Hue/Saturation layer you created and slowly push the Hue setting to either the left or right side. You’ll notice that as the slider passes through the colors found in your photo the tone changes, giving you control over how much detail is visible. Okay reset the Hue slider to 0. Above that slider there’s a pulldown menu that lets you specify the color range you want to change. Select one of the dominant colors in your photo and again push the slider slowly from center to either right or left. Change the color selector and repeat. You can also push the Saturation slider left and right for different results.

Using the Black & White Adjustment Layer

Back when Photoshop hit CS3 Adobe introduced the Black & White adjustment layer. This adjustment layer aimed at simplifying the task of converting color photos to black and white and it does an excellent job. I use this adjustment layer almost exclusively as it’s a bit quicker and one less layer which helps in reducing file size.

To use the Black & White adjustment layer choose New Adjustment Layer > Black & White from the Layer menu and click OK. You’ll notice the interface gives you similar options to the Hue / Saturation method in that you can control the tones of the various colors in your photo by moving the appropriate slider left or right. There are also presets that allow you to quickly filter out one color or another. There’s even an infrared preset that can bring really dreamy effects to your photos.

For greater control over the shadow details you can use a Levels or Curves adjustment layer in addition to either one of the color to black and white conversion methods. The main thing to watch here is that you retain detail where you want it and lose it (if you choose) where you don’t. Ansel Adams would be proud. One thing I like about the Hue / Saturation method is that you can add as many of these “color mode” layers as you want along with layer masks to make more localized adjustments.
