Tech Savy Shopping Tip: Use Google Note in Reader

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I recently read a blog post on how to use Google’s “Note in Reader” bookmarklet to create RSS feeds from any website. Pretty neat trick…

Last minute Christmas shopping for us starts by checking the various retailer’s websites for the best deals, but sometimes you get to the store and realize there are two or three different versions of the item you are looking for. They may have different prices and maybe none of them are the same price as the one listed online.

You can print web pages out and carry them with you to the store, or try this tip using Google’s Note in Reader, and accessing your notes from Google Reader on your mobile phone.

Step 1: Get a Google account. It’s free!

Step 2: Get the Note in Reader Bookmarklet for your web browser.

Step 3: Visit your favorite retailer’s website and locate the product you want to buy.

Step 4: select just the relevant content (i.e., text, images, embedded YouTube clips but no navigation areas) with your mouse and then press the “Note in Reader” button.

Step 5: A pop-up dialog will open in your browser. Click “add tags” and assign a tag to this page (your recipients name for example), and put the price and product number in the text area that has the quotation marks.

When you’re out and about doing your shopping, you can access Google Reader notes and you’ll have pictures, product numbers and prices of all the items you want to buy.

How about you? Got any tips to make shopping for last minute gifts a bit easier?

Picasa Tips From Google

How do I send a high resolution photo from Picasa? (Using full resolution)

You can send a photo in its full resolution using Picasa. You must set Picasa’s email options to send the photo in its original size, and you can only send one photo at a time.

1. Open Picasa.
2. Click “Tools” > “Options” > “Email.”
3. Under “When sending single pictures, resize to:”, select the “Original Size” option.
4. Click “OK.”

Once this option is selected, any single photo you send will be the complete photo file. At the present time it is not possible to send multiple photos in their original sizes.
