Adobe Opens Door to Second Lightroom

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Adobe has made Lightroom 2.0 available for public beta. The software, that offers a series of enhancements, is at a very early stage and the company recommends its use only for “kicking the tires,” and providing feedback about the new features. These include multiple monitor support, the ability to make localized corrections and improved organizational tools.

The beta is available here but Adobe warns that it will not update V1.3.1 libraries (it is designed to run alongside, without interfering with V1.3.1 installations), and that corrections made in the beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final, production version of the software.

Adobe Ships Camera Raw 4.4 and Lightroom 1.4

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

UPDATE March 17, 2008: The Lightroom 1.4 update for Mac and Windows has been temporarily removed from the Adobe.com web site. Those Lightroom users who have installed Lightroom 1.4 should uninstall the update and install Lightroom 1.3.1.(Mac, Win) until a further update can be provided.

For those not in immediate need of the updated camera support available in Camera Raw 4.4 or the DNG 4.4 Converter, it’s recommended that you also continue working with the 4.3.1 versions. (Mac, Win)

***********************************************************

The Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 updates have been posted to the following locations: Lightroom(Mac, Win), Camera Raw(Mac, Win). The updates include support for the following new camera models:

Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi/EOS Kiss X2)
Fujifilm S100FS
Nikon D60
Olympus SP-570 UZ
Pentax K20D
Pentax K200D
Sony A200
Sony A300
Sony A350

Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 include corrections for the following issues:
Previous camera profiles identified in the Calibrate panel of the Develop module may have displayed poor results at extreme ends of the temperature and tint ranges. A new camera profile identified as Camera Raw 4.4 is now available and will be applied by default to all images without existing Camera Raw or Lightroom settings. The creation of new default profiles will also include the updated Camera Raw 4.4 profile. Images edited in Camera Raw or Lightroom with earlier profiles will retain the earlier profile value and visual appearance.

In previous grayscale conversions the Color Noise setting was disabled and this could result in an image with excessive noise when grayscale channel mixing is applied. Both the tool and effect have been enabled in Lightroom 1.4 and Camera Raw 4.4 providing the ability to reduce noise in grayscale conversions. In order to return to the prior visual appearance, Color Noise reduction can be set to zero.

Lightroom 1.4 includes corrections for the following issue:
Compatibility with legacy printer drivers on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has been updated. I’d like to thank everyone who commented on my earlier post regarding this topic. Some valuable feedback was provided and by working directly with Apple and Epson we are able to provide a resolution through this Lightroom update.

Also note that a new version of the free DNG Converter is also available along with the Camera Raw updates.

Candy Hearts for Scrapbooking Valentine’s Day Pages

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Candy Hearts are the perfect embellishments for Valentine’s Day scrapbook pages. Rebecca Ludens at About.com does not, however, recommend getting out your GlueDots and affixing the little candies right to your pages. Instead, Rebecca makes them out of cardstock.

To begin, select colors of cardstock that go with the page you are making or are true to conversation heart real-life colors. I chose pastel shades of blue, yellow, orange, purple, pink, and white. Print conversation heart phrases leaving plenty of space around each one as shown here. You can make up your own words or use these suggestions: AMORE, ROMEO, ANGEL, IN THE MOOD, MUCH ADO, HUGS, KISSES, LOVE, GIRL, TIME OUT, YOU ROCK, LET’S DO LUNCH, CUPID, AS IF, LOVE ME TENDER, YOU GO GIRL, I GOT U BABE, EMAIL ME, COOL DUDE, 3 WISHES, EVER AFTER, DREAM, CHARM ME, LOVE U, CLASS ACT, PEN PAL, LOOK GOOD, DIVA, WHAT’S UP, URA QT, SMILE, UR A STAR.

Punch out heart shapes using a paper punch around the printed text. To be able to line up your punch perfectly, simply turn it upside down and press it down on a table to punch. This way you can see exactly where it will punch through the paper as shown here. Punch out hearts from a variety of colors and with lots of fun phrases.

Add small pieces of foam dimensional tape or PopUp GlueDots to the back of each heart. This extra lift off of your scrapbook page will make the hearts look like the have the dimension of a real conversation candy heart.

Add your completed candy hearts to a Valentine’s Day scrapbook page layout such as the one shown here. You could also use the hearts to embellish Valentine’s Day cards, or even as closures on the outside of card envelopes.

Bruce Fraser Tribute DVD Now Avalable

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

The stars of imaging came out en masse during Macworld 2007 to honor one of their own: digital imaging pioneer Bruce Fraser. Much like the way Bruce’s inspired and generous work moved many thousands to create superior imaging; so were the industry’s giants, both corporate and individual, moved to come together to share their unique perspective, anecdotes, and most of all - appreciation for Bruce’s enormous contributions to the arts.

Now, a year later, the Bruce Fraser Tribute organizing committee, with the support of Adobe Systems, Inc., Apple, Inc., Epson America, Inc., Hewlett Packard Company, Microsoft Corporation, Peachpit Press, and X-Rite, Incorporated; is offering a faithful record of last year’s remarkable event, captured on DVD and available at no charge (shipping and handling fees apply) via www.brucefrasertribute.com.

The Tribute committee, comprised of Larry Baca, R. Mac Holbert, Chris Murphy, Andrew Rodney and Jeff Schewe, are asking the graphic arts community to consider making a voluntary donation to help retire medical expenses left behind by the rare lung cancer that took Bruce away from us. The donations can be made directly on the Tribute website.

“If you were fortunate to attend the Tribute itself, you will find the DVD to be a treasured keepsake; if not, you will experience a program that will touch your heart, make you laugh and most of all demonstrate how one thoughtful individual can hold a unique place in an industry and in the lives of all whom he touched,” says Baca.

The DVD culminates with an extraordinarily moving gesture of gratitude expressed by Bruce’s wife, Angela; displayed over a synchronized and moving arrangement of “Scotland the Brave” written and performed by famed musician Ronan Hardiman, who personally authorized the use of his commercially-released recording for the Tribute DVD.

The “Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser” DVD

An Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser was a lively and engaging recollection of how digital imaging and desktop color has evolved over more than 20 years to become the everyday phenomenon it is. Hosted with grace and unrehearsed humor by Bruce’s friend and fellow musician and artist, Graham Nash, the Tribute was filled with striking still visuals, video clips and told by the geeks and non-geeks who knew Bruce along the way, (including famed landscape photographer and digital pioneer Stephen Johnson; Bill Atkinson, an Apple Fellow and now a photographer himself; and Adobe Photoshop engineers and friends, Thomas Knoll and Mark Hamburg, to name but a few),

An Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser gave attendees a vivid, inside look at how one dedicated and focused person of extraordinary humility could shape an industry, from billion dollar manufacturers to home-based photo enthusiasts.

A maximum of six DVDs may be requested per order. A shipping charge of $7.50 USD applies for the first DVD, plus $1.50 USD for each additional DVD when all are shipped to the same address.

If you would like to make a voluntary donation to help retire Bruce’s unmet medical expenses, please check the “Voluntary Donation” box and indicate the amount (in USD) to be added to your DVD order.

The first 100 donors who make gifts of $100.00 or more will be acknowledged by receiving a choice of a Commemorative Set or Limited Edition Portrait. The print is a limited edition (not to exceed 200 copies) of a portrait of Bruce Fraser in Chicago on March 5th, 2006. The image is 9.5″x14.5″ on A3 (11.7″x16.5″) with piezo pigment inks The prints are signed and dated on the back by Jeff Schewe. Supplies are strictly limited.
