Holiday Crafting: Duct Tape Santa Hat

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

duct tape, santa hat, crafts Duct tape may be one of the world’s greatest inventions. It can be used to fix just about anything, as a fashion accessory, or for a bit of holiday fun.

This project takes about 2 hours

What you’ll need:
Duck brand duct tape – Red (1 Roll) and White (1 Roll)
Fabric- 24”x14”
Styrofoam Ball – Small
Scissors
X-Acto Knife
Hot Glue Gun or Super Glue
Cutting Board
Ruler
Pencil or Pen

Instructions:
Cut 2 pieces of fabric in the shape of triangles measuring 14 inches up both sides and 12 inches across the bottom.

Cover each piece in red tape.

Lay the pieces on top of each other and tape them together up each side.

Lay out a strip of white duct tape 12 inches long sticky side up on your cutting board. Tear off another strip of white tape 12 inches long and stick it to the one on your cutting board. Make sure not to place it directly on top of the piece on the cutting board, rather leave about a centimeter of stickiness on either side.

Using an X-Acto knife cut off one of the sticky sides right at the edge. Save this piece.

Cut slits in the tape to create a fringe effect.

Take the thin strip of tape you cut with the X-Acto blade and place that sticky side up on the cutting board.

Now lay your fringe on it so it’s just touching the edge of the fringe. Now fold the fringe in half so that you have a row of loops. Leave enough stickiness at the top of the fringe to stick to the hat.

Stick your first row of loops to the bottom of one side of the hat. Repeat 5 more times so that you have 3 loops of fringe on either side.

Lay out a strip of white tape about 12-14 inches long and cut it into small squares. Cover the Small Foam Ball in the tape pieces. Roll the ball around on table so the tape crinkles a little as you go. You can also make dents in it with your finger.

Take a ballpoint pen or pencil and push it through the ball being careful not to push all the way through the ball.

Using a hot glue gun or super glue, put a small amount of glue into the hole in the ball and then place the ball on the point of the hat.

Wait until the glue dries to wear the hat.

Make Your Holiday Mailing List Create Itself

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Every year, especially during the holiday season, people tell us how they wish they’d had their recipient list of addresses organized in a spreadsheet so that we could print them on the envelopes of their holiday photo cards. If you haven’t already done so, this year let your mailing list create itself! All you need is a Google account. If you don’t have one, you can set it up for free here.

Create new spreadsheet in Google Docs

We’re going to start with creating a spreadsheet. From the upper left corner of the Google Docs interface, click “Create New”, and select “Spreadsheet” from the menu. Be careful, at this point your new spreadsheet is not saved. You can click the save button in the upper right corner and give it a descriptive name. For this example, we’ll call ours “Scrapless Press Addresses”.

The top row (1) is sectioned out for your headers. It’s already highlighted for you so you can start typing. For a mailing list, the basic headers are going to be Name, Address 1, Address 2 (for apartment, suite or floor number), City, State and Zip Code. So type the word “Name” into the first cell, then press the tab key and type “Address 1″, then tab… When you’re done you should have column headers for A-F. You’re almost done!

Create a form in Google Docs

Customize your Google Docs form From the Form menu, select Create a Form. A window will pop-up showing you the form fields that will be used to collect your addresses. You can give it a fancier title here as well as instructions, like “It’s time to send out holiday cards. Please give me your address”.

Further customize your Google Docs form

When you move your mouse over the column headers (Name, Address 1 etc.) you’ll notice it highlights and gives you an editing button. It looks like a pencil. Click this button to change the names of the headers to more descriptive titles. This won’t affect your spreadsheet. For example, you can change “Name” to a question, like “To whom should I address the envelope?) I know, a bit formal but you get the idea.

You can also doll it up a bit with a theme. I didn’t see a Christmas theme but they do offer some basic designs to make your form look a bit more inviting. Now click the “Save” button on the top right.

That’s it. You’re ready to sit back and have your holiday mailing list create itself. You can get the web address to the form by clicking the link at the bottom of the pop-up window, or e-mail the list if you have a Gmail account.

Happy Holidays!
